A Letter From the President: Jeanne Cunicelli

Reflecting on the successes of 2022 and the continued hard work of our stellar UPMC Enterprises team.

Colleagues,

It’s hard to believe that the end of 2022 is quickly approaching, so, as we reflect on the past year at UPMC Enterprises, I want to congratulate each and all of you on a job well done. Making life changing medicine happen is not trivial, but Enterprises embodies this mission with much expertise and such vigor. Your passion truly shines through every facet of your work and interactions with your colleagues around this great system. It is with great pride that I look at our collective work and thought I’d call out some of the most notable successes of the year as One Enterprises.

In 2022, our Digital Solutions team secured a variety of partnerships with clinical and operational leadership across UPMC. Throughout the year, we celebrated major funding milestones for companies such as Abridge and Infectious Disease Connect. We were inspired by collaborations featuring Alexandria Charts (with Clearsense), Realyze Intelligence (with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering), and Redesign Health. We also welcomed several new companies to our portfolio, including Pip Care, sovaSage, and Hashed Health. The Technology Solutions team also developed the outstanding “Technology Solutions Catalog” showcasing the breadth and expertise of their work.

Meanwhile, our Translational Sciences team continued to identify the latest and greatest in health care research and to position UPMC as a leader in life sciences investing. We witnessed some significant new partnerships in 2022, including Avista with Roche, Generian with Astellas, CodeBio with Takeda, and Cerevance with Merck. Several Translational Sciences portfolio companies also hit funding milestones, including Novasenta, SparingVision, and BlueSphere Bio. These accomplishments represent a fulfilled goal for Translational Sciences, which is a commitment to support financial, operational, and reputational value for UPMC through investments and subject matter expertise.

Our MyUPMC team continued to increase app engagement and improve user experience for patients – making it easier than ever to book and receive care. One of the most remarkable achievements from the MyUPMC team this year was the new ability for users to schedule mammograms online – a major win for women’s health. MyUPMC also worked closely with the UPMC Health Plan to provide access to member-patient content such as plans and coverage, spending summary, claims, and explanations of benefits. This initiative began to support their new Virtual Care focused health plan launching January 1 of 2022 but has since expanded to support seven different coverage types, which covers the vast majority of Health Plan members accessing MyUPMC.

Our Shared Services team deserves equal recognition (or, as we’d put it, a special “Shout-Aht”) for their contributions in 2022. Our HR, Legal, Finance, Marketing, and Operations/Opportunities & Investments teams have gone above and beyond in supporting UPMC Enterprises and our portfolio companies throughout the year. Our Operations team has made meaningful contributions to our workplace culture – from an office refresh to fun events like the Fall Gathering and Holiday Luncheon. Our Opportunities & Investments team focused on helping us stay connected through the Personnel Wiki and BkSq Connect. They also worked tirelessly to see the PHDA’s renewal to fruition. Our HR team was busy this year creating a new Enterprises-specific awards program to spotlight the great talent that we have. They also worked diligently to fill our open positions, hosted several training sessions for managers, and even created a new career pathing project to benefit our employees. Additionally, our Marketing team supported our Enterprises brand and many of our portfolio companies in all of their branding and marketing needs. They also managed our thought leadership opportunities and conferences, positioning Enterprises and our leaders as experts in the industry. Our Legal team managed an incredible workload, including a variety of transactions and investment opportunities, which speaks to the volume of exciting work taking place here at Enterprises. Finally, our Finance team’s ability to seamlessly handle the financials of Enterprises and our portfolio companies is second to none. We are so fortunate to have a top-tier Shared Services group to provide us with such a well-rounded set of resources.

Of course, the accomplishments I’ve mentioned here are not a comprehensive list by any means, but it’s an impressive collection that should remind us of how hard we’ve worked this year, and how much that dedication has paid off. While each focus area and team has exceled individually, I’m here to remind you all of the mission that we are meant to serve as a part of One Enterprises: to make life changing medicine happen. I hope you can carry this message with you as motivation to finish out the year strong, and to make 2023 our best year yet.

 Best wishes,

Jeanne
