Matthias Kleinz, DVM, PhD

Matthias Kleinz, DVM, PhD, is executive vice president and head of strategic partnerships at UPMC Enterprises. In this role, he leads efforts to develop and structure high-impact collaborations with leading life sciences and health care technology innovators aimed at solving complex clinical problems through creative, multi-dimensional partnerships.

Working across UPMC’s health care innovation ecosystem, Matthias helps connect external partners with UPMC’s clinical, scientific, operational, and commercial capabilities to create long-term collaborations that generate meaningful value for members, patients, providers, and industry partners.

Matthias joined UPMC Enterprises in 2017 to help build the life sciences innovation and investment team, working to identify, evaluate, and commercialize transformative life sciences technologies. Since then, he has played a key role in advancing UPMC Enterprises’ mission of translating scientific and clinical innovation into scalable solutions that improve patient care and create lasting value. He was the founding CEO of UPMC Enterprises portfolio company Novasenta, and serves on the board of Generian, Cerevance and Precede.

Prior to joining UPMC Enterprises, Matthias spent nine years in management consulting with L.E.K. Consulting’s life sciences practice in Boston and London, leading more than 70 strategic assignments for clients across the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical technology, and health care sectors in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Matthias earned his PhD from the Clinical Pharmacology Unit at the University of Cambridge, UK, where his research focused on the early-stage discovery of G-protein-coupled receptor targets for hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. He also holds a doctorate in clinical veterinary medicine from Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany.
