Top of Mind for Top Health Systems: 2025 Research Highlights Focus on Digital Transformation
Digital health transformation is key for the 57 health care executive respondents in this year’s Top of Mind for Top Health Systems survey. This annual research conducted by the Center for Connected Medicine at UPMC in partnership with KLAS Research aims to highlight the strategies and technologies that are priorities for health systems and their executives.
Revenue cycle management (RCM) innovations that improve efficiency and automation emerged as the greatest indicator of financial success, with clinical workflow optimization, electronic health records (EHRs), and patient access also highly ranked as initiatives yielding the greatest ROI.
When it comes to making strategic investments in such technologies, results showed that executives consider patient care and outcomes, financial return, and clinician burnout and retention as the top factors that drive their decision-making. These results go hand-in-hand, as a commitment to prioritizing patient care often drives health systems to invest in EHR optimization, clinical workflow automation, and AI-enhanced diagnostics.
AI applications remain the focal point for health care innovation. Due to its potential to transform multiple health care domains, health system leaders are eager to invest in AI automations that can reduce the administrative burden and address labor shortages, enhance clinical decision-making, and improve patient engagement.
Other notable trends that are exciting health care leaders include:

- Next-generation diagnostics.
- Patient access and engagement.
- Workforce and workflow efficiency.
The Top of Mind survey collected responses from U.S. hospitals, health systems, and other health care organizations in January 2025. More than 95% of respondents were C-suite and other senior executives.
