UPMC Health Plan, Community Provider Services’ Retail Pharmacy Network, UPMC Corporate HR, and UPMC Enterprises collaboration created to support UPMC employees with medication adherence, affordability, and connection to resources.
UPMC Rx Express is an AI-powered virtual assistant and CRM platform currently in use at 13 UPMC facilities. Rx Express was designed to lower readmissions by integrating pharmacy support directly into the discharge process for patients. The solution was built by UPMC Enterprises, and the team continues to partner with others around UPMC to not only improve, but also expand the service to patients, employees, and members.
Rx Express creates an easy and convenient way to fill prescriptions. Those enrolled in the program receive automatic follow-ups (SMS and robocalls) making prescription refills and adherence convenient and easy. The service has been customized for hospital patients, surgery center patients, and doctor/clinic patients, including UPMC Emergency Room patients – and is now being expanded to UPMC employees. Rx Express is supporting employees with select chronic conditions. Employees who opt into the program will be able to get seamless refills from UPMC pharmacies, ongoing support, and connections to UPMC Health Plan resources.

- Connecting employees to UPMC retail pharmacies for refill management and to arrange delivery
- Benefitting employees for utilizing a preferred UPMC pharmacy by bundling copays for cost savings for select drugs
- Connecting employees to Health Plan resources like Member Services and Health Coaches
Through this program, UPMC Rx Express aims to increase medication adherence, reduce the total cost of care and decrease absenteeism related to disease state-specific complications. The pilot is a collaboration that connects UPMC Corporate HR, Community Provider Services, the Health Plan, and UPMC Enterprises for the benefit of our employees.
