Meet our Summer Associates for 2021

UPMC Enterprises

UPMC Enterprises is excited to welcome seven individuals to this year’s Summer Associate program!

During their time with us, the Summer Associates will support UPMC’s mission by working with their teams to create solutions to health care’s challenges. Our Summer Associates will be working across different departments and teams, from MyUPMC to marketing, to improve patient care and drive innovation within the industry.

Keep reading to get to know our 2021 Summer Associates and find out who is an avid young adult fiction reader, who was a trombone sensation on YouTube, and who teaches swing dancing class at college.

Wayne Bloom

Project/Area of Work: MyUPMC

Education and Area of Study: Slippery Rock University; Computer Science

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I own a great host of orange things and have long since adopted the color itself as an identity of sorts. One rarely, if at all, will see me not wearing something orange.

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… My goal was to work somewhere full-time developing mobile applications with the possibility for future employment. I chose to work here because the position fit my goals exactly.


Jonah Cagley

Project/Area of Work: Business Development and Marketing

Education and Area of Study: Duke University; Neuroscience, Economics, Visual & Media Studies

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I posted a video of me playing the trombone in elementary school. It now has 50,000 views on YouTube

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… I wanted to gain business experience at a large-scale corporation while also working in an industry that directly improves the wellbeing of others.


Shunqiao Huang

Project/Area of Work: Natural Language Processing (NLP) Pipeline

Education and Area of Study: Columbia University; Computer Science

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I like strolling on rainy days.

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… I am interested in the health care industry, and Enterprises gives the opportunity to deal with real medical data and work on practical challenges. It would be a valuable experience for me to pursue further in this field.


Justin Karli

Project/Area of Work: hcOS Operations

Education and Area of Study: University of Pittsburgh; Computer Science, Mathematics

One Interesting Fact about Myself: Aquariums are my favorite places to visit.

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… I wanted the opportunity to work at a large, professional company that is making a significant impact on the world. The values of UPMC also aligned very closely with what I was looking for in a company.


Ryan Murphy

Project/Area of Work: Cloud Infrastructure Systems

Education and Area of Study: University of Pittsburgh; Computer Science, Mathematics

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I can play Guitar, Banjo, and Harmonica.

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… I believe in UPMC’s mission and am excited to help develop technology that will bring about outstanding patient care.


Nathaniel Shi

Project/Area of Work: MyUPMC

Education and Area of Study: Grove City College; Computer Science

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I teach swing dancing at Grove City College

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… it was a place that I could really see myself growing especially in working embedded within an actual project team rather than intern-specific work.


Sreemoyee Som

Project/Area of Work: Digital Solutions

Education and Area of Study: Carnegie Mellon University; Master’s in Healthcare Analytics

One Interesting Fact about Myself: I will always check out the young adult fiction section in any bookstore! I think they make some of the most compelling characters and story arcs.

I Chose to Work at UPMC because… After consulting for payors, PBMs, and retail pharmacies, I was excited to better understand the provider space. Furthermore, the IDFS ecosystem meant an opportunity to align incentives for meaningful patient-impact programs.
