The Anniversary Spotlight highlights an employee celebrating a significant work anniversary at UPMC every month.

This month we feature Yuan Brustoloni, a Senior Data Engineer at UPMC Enterprises working on data integrations.

Yuan started her UPMC career in 2006 as a system analyst at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital and two years later moved to the Askesis Development Group within UPMC Health Plan. Her journey at UPMC continued when she transferred to the data engineering team at Enterprises in 2021.

Yuan’s work on the data integrations team involves using healthcare data standards such as FHIR and HL7 to move structured and unstructured data from throughout the UPMC system into Alexandria Charts, where it can be made available for analytics.

One of Yuan’s newest projects involved working with portfolio company Arkos on a system to integrate data from Health Information Exchanges from around the country. “This project is exciting because it’s new. We created a whole new architecture and delivered it in two months,” she said.

With more than three decades of experience in software development and engineering, Yuan has worked in many different environments. She values Enterprises’ focus on driving innovation throughout the UPMC system. “At Enterprises, you get to see new technologies, new methodologies, people trying new things,” she said. “We get to use new technologies to improve processes, which is very rewarding.”

She also appreciates her teammates in data engineering, describing the team as “really open to creating a friendly working environment.”

Yuan continued, “I feel like I’m a part of something bigger, that I’m more than just a worker.”

Asked what advice she would give younger coworkers about having a long career at UPMC, Yuan recommended a passion for health care, seeking out new opportunities that help you grow and learn, and keeping lines of communication open with managers and colleagues.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and always be learning,” she said.
