Lisa Madden, Senior Technical Program Manager – Engineering Operations

How did you get into the industry? Not long after my first position at UPMC, Billing Coordinator at Montefiore Hospital’s Vascular Lab (working my way through college), I was asked to implement their first automated billing system. I said, ‘sure,’ which paved the path to many rewarding and challenging positions and projects over the past 20+ years here at UPMC ISD and Enterprises. I have spent the majority of my career implementing electronic medical record systems including Cerner, Epic, dbMotion, CoPath, Aria and building interfaces between all of them – fun stuff!!

How long have you been working at UPMCE? 20+ at UPMC, including five at UPMC Enterprises.

Thinking about your work, what is the funniest thing you used to use tech-wise that you don’t use anymore? I would have to say the dreaded pager – ‘beep, beep, beep’ in the middle of the night – many years on call.

As technology has evolved throughout the years, what stands out to you the most? The evolution of cell phones for sure. The smartphone has changed the way we communicate and interact with one another and the world in so many ways.

What’s your favorite part about working here? Culture of creativity and innovation.

Do you have an unusual talent or hobby? There are two I’d like to share: 1) I have a great interest in natural medicine. I continue to explore ways to naturally heal the body and have learned quite a bit in this field including integrative medicine, functional medicine, kinesiology, chiropractic, acupuncture, healing herbs, etc. It is quite amazing and still so much to learn! 2) Dancing with my daughters. Each year, my two daughters and I dance in the ‘Mother-Daughter Dance’ at my younger daughter’s dance recital. My older daughter was a dancer too. My first stab at dancing on stage was just a few years ago when I decided to give it a try. It was an amazing experience and so much fun to do as a family.

Share any fun fact: I grew up in an entrepreneur household. My father was a technology guru and in addition to working at Westinghouse as a Nuclear Engineer, owned many businesses including ‘Madden Electronics.’ My father immersed us in business from an early age and gave us daily lessons on how to run a business and customer service excellence. My favorite business was called ‘Roller Light and Sound.’ We traveled with my dad across the country as he met with clients and we skated in many cool roller rinks. We even had a fog machine and strobe light in our own game room.
