‘Kindness, fairness, integrity:’ Matt Grant Honored as Dignity & Respect Champion

Every January, UPMC distinguishes employees from across the system that embody the core value of Dignity & Respect at our organization.

This award is given to a person who models behavior that supports inclusion by going above and beyond to demonstrate the core values of dignity and respect in all they do, while enhancing the UPMC workplace culture and setting the standard for their colleagues and leaders. The awardee creates an inclusive environment by welcoming new employees and making everyone feel valued and appreciated in their workplace and treats others the way they want to be treated.

This year, 30 outstanding employees across all divisions of UPMC were honored for their commitment to showing dignity and respect in all aspects of their work. Congratulations to all of the 2025 awardees!

Matthew Grant, vice president, Digital Solutions, was recognized as one of this years’ winners.

In his role, Matt supports the Digital Solutions team by working on innovative health care solutions that positively impact patients and providers. He has been with UPMC for nearly two decades, with more than 10 years’ experience at Enterprises. His favorite things about UPMC Enterprises are the talented, creative, and passionate people who work here, and the ever-evolving nature of their work that provides new opportunities to problem-solve, innovate, and make a difference. Matt values Enterprises’ strong sense of collaboration and shared purpose, which makes even the most challenging projects feel rewarding.

Matt took a few moments to reflect on the recognition:

“I would like to express my gratitude — not only for this recognition but also for the people I get to work with every day. The culture at UPMC Enterprises is a reflection of the amazing individuals who make up this organization, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of it. I hope that this recognition serves as a reminder to all of us that the way we treat each other matters. A culture of dignity and respect isn’t something that happens by chance; it’s something we build together, one interaction at a time. I’m excited to continue being a part of that effort and to learn from those around me. Thank you again for this honor — I’m truly humbled!”

Q: What does being a Dignity and Respect Champion mean to you?

A: To me, being a Dignity and Respect Champion means fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, heard, and supported — regardless of their role, background, or experience. It means actively listening, being empathetic, and making sure that every person has the space to contribute their ideas without fear of judgment.

At its core, dignity and respect are about treating people with kindness, fairness, and integrity — principles that were instilled in me from a young age by my parents. They taught me the importance of humility, inclusion, and always considering how my actions impact others. I carry those lessons with me every day, whether in the workplace or beyond.

I believe that small actions — acknowledging a colleague’s hard work, giving someone the space to share their thoughts, or simply checking in on a team member — can have a profound impact on workplace culture.

This recognition as a Dignity and Respect Champion is an honor, but I see it as a shared responsibility that we all hold in making our workplace a welcoming and inclusive space.

Q: How do you think we can continue to promote these values at UPMC and UPMC Enterprises?

A: Creating and maintaining a culture of dignity and respect requires continuous effort from all of us, especially as leaders. It’s about setting the tone through our actions — whether that’s fostering open communication, celebrating diverse perspectives, or ensuring that every individual feels seen and heard.

One of the most impactful ways we can continue to promote these values is by recognizing that everyone is navigating their own challenges, both personally and professionally. A simple moment of understanding or support can make a world of difference. It’s also important to encourage an environment where feedback is welcomed, inclusivity is prioritized, and collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.

Ultimately, it’s not always grand gestures that shape culture — it’s often the small, everyday interactions that collectively define who we are as an organization. I’m proud to be a part of UPMC Enterprises and am committed to doing my part in making dignity and respect a guiding force in our workplace.
