Anniversary Spotlight: David Doyle Celebrates 18 Years at UPMC

The Anniversary Spotlight highlights an employee celebrating a significant work anniversary at UPMC every month.

David Doyle enrolled at Penn State Behrend, with astronomy being his first career choice until he realized that being an astronomer was nothing like being on Star Trek. After talking with friends and hearing about their classes, he decided to explore business and computer science majors. He graduated with a degree in Management Information Systems, a combination of information technology and business.

Being born and raised in Pittsburgh, David Doyle always knew of UPMC. In fact, David knew a handful of individuals who worked for UPMC, including his twin sister – that’s how he found out how great it is to be part of UPMC. Ultimately, David’s knowledge and experience allowed him to pursue many opportunities at UPMC over the last 18 years.

In 2005, fresh out of college, David started at UPMC as a Systems Analyst on the EPIC team, the software for outpatient electronic medical records (EMR). While there, he was responsible for processing claims and statements regarding patients.

After a couple of years, David managed Cadence, EPIC’s scheduling tool that UPMC utilizes to schedule appointments and bill patients. He was the point person between EPIC corporate and UPMC.

From that role, David transitioned to the Technology Development Center (TDC), known today as UPMC Enterprises, as a Systems Analyst. At the time, the TDC didn’t have a team who supported or implemented products such as Virtual Care Collaboration, Convergence, and MyUPMC. David and two others officially formed the first implementation support team at the TDC.

“It was a neat time because all these new products were up and coming,” explained David. “We got to work with doctors, go into the field, execute the products being developed for so long, and watch them be utilized.”

David then took an opportunity with the radiology department within the TDC, where he joined a team of engineers as a Product Analyst. He helped to maintain and update custom applications and even launched new functionalities that the radiologists needed.

“The work I was involved with on the radiology team – especially developing a biopsy reporting system for mammography,” said David when asked what his biggest accomplishment was thus far at UPMC. “Hearing the radiologists utilizing and appreciating processes I assisted in developing made me feel like I truly made a difference.”

For the past five years, David has been part of the MyUPMC team – recently promoted to Expert Systems Analyst. He is the support person for the MyUPMC Help Desk, which takes calls directly from patients. He assists whenever complicated issues arise or if there is an ongoing pattern of issues – that’s when David will work with the engineering or quality assurance team to create a solution.

Outside work, David enjoys traveling, hanging out with his family, being one of eight siblings, and attending shows downtown with a glass of wine and a good meal – his favorite is Mezzo at Sienna Mercato.

“The employees,” explains David is why he continues to stay at UPMC. “And being that, there is always an opportunity to pursue.”
