Data from medical images is a rich source of information that can benefit patient care and research but is too often siloed and uneasily shared.
UPMC Enterprises recognizes the value of those data and has invested in Medicom, a health tech startup that is leading enterprise imaging interoperability with a platform that addresses the long-standing challenge of making medical images and relevant clinical data more accessible to patients, providers, and researchers.
“At UPMC Enterprises, we have a front row seat to the transformation that health care is undergoing as data becomes more accessible and interoperability improves,” said Brent Burns, executive vice president of Digital Solutions at UPMC Enterprises.
“Medical imaging files and metadata are critical to supporting clinical and academic research to develop novel therapeutics. We are thrilled to partner with Medicom and bring their expertise in secure and efficient medical image and data exchange to support UPMC’s continued leadership in health care research,” said Burns.
Approximately 30% of the world’s data are being generated by the health care industry and growing at a rapid rate. Medical imaging data specifically accounts for about 90% of all generated health care data, according to a report published by EMC.
Despite the importance and ubiquity of medical imaging, health systems and providers still face obstacles in sharing data with peers in a standardized and secure way.
Medicom, which developed the first fully federated, decentralized, peer-to-peer network for medical image and clinical data exchange, leverages its network and generative AI to consolidate imaging data into a single platform for all enterprise imaging workflows.
The platform enables patients to access and share their images directly within their existing patient portal and provides researchers with longitudinal patient-cohort specific de-identified data for research and development.
A leader in the health care technology industry, Medicom’s platform is widely used across health systems and Medicom is a trusted vendor used by the Veterans Affairs Administration for secure medical image sharing across the United States.
Medicom also is used across more than 900 health systems and was recognized as one of the most promising health IT imaging vendors of 2024 by KLAS Research.
