UPMC Enterprises and Vanderbilt Health have officially joined the Digital Consortium created by Aegis Ventures. The New York-based venture studio formed the Digital Consortium as a strategic alliance of leading health systems to co-develop, invest in, and deploy health technology solutions to address the most pressing problems in health care.
As one of the nation’s leading health care institutions that is also pioneering innovation and commercialization in the industry, UPMC Enterprises is excited to contribute its experience and perspective to the Digital Consortium. Dr. Aman Mahajan, senior vice president of health innovation at UPMC Enterprises, facilitated the partnership with the consortium, which formed to put health systems and their clinicians and patients at the center of new technology development.
“We found that the consortium was fairly unique in its construct; that it aimed to put the health systems at the center for digital health innovation to address health care’s most pressing challenges,” Dr. Mahajan said. “While we’ve had great success at UPMC over the years in creating, co-developing, investing, and scaling innovative health tech, we saw this as an opportunity to partner and collaborate with like-minded heath systems.”
Formed by Aegis earlier this year, the Consortium’s nine initial members are Endeavor Health, Indiana University Health, Memorial Hermann Health System, Northwell Health, Novant Health, Ochsner Health, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, Sharp HealthCare, and Stanford Health Care.
With more than 40 active investments in early- to late-stage growth-stage companies, UPMC Enterprises’ focus on clinician-scientist and health system-led innovation aligns closely with the goals of the Digital Consortium. UPMC Enterprises supports digital health and life sciences companies with research, capital, and industry expertise as they work to solve the most challenging issues in health care with the latest technologies.
Together, these 11 systems will collaborate with the common goal of reimagining the health care experience for all stakeholders through a health system-led approach to build and invest in new technologies.
“We believe it’s through these partnerships we can truly learn from their experiences and bring forward the health care technologies that can transform patient care and experience. Those are the overriding reasons we chose to partner with the Digital Consortium,” Dr. Mahajan said.
The key focus areas for the Digital Consortium align well with UPMC Enterprises’ interest in improving patient care, reducing clinician burnout, and integrating AI into health care workflows to benefit patients and providers. These initiatives are some that the organization plans to explore with Aegis’ assistance as they work to bring value to patients, accelerate the development process, and advance technology for health care systems.
“I’m thrilled to welcome UPMC Enterprises and Vanderbilt Health to the Digital Consortium,” said John Beadle, Aegis Ventures co-founder and managing partner. “These new partners are already putting innovation at the center of what they do. By combining their knowledge with that of our existing health system partners, we have the ability to make a real difference in the solutions that are being created across both healthcare and technology.”
