Introducing the Data Analytics and Informatics Team

At Enterprises, we understand what it’s like to solve problems for the health care industry – internally for UPMC and externally in the market. The journey to finding a solution can be long and tiresome, but our experts at Enterprises are seasoned at creating novel solutions. To support Enterprises, our portfolio companies, and investment partners along this arduous journey to address complex health care challenges, we created the Data Analytics and Informatics Team to answer the right questions with accurate quantitative information.

The team aims to support Enterprises’ critical need to demonstrate the why and how with data for an academic health care organization whose first thought is to care for patients and make life-changing decisions for them.

The Data Analytics and Informatics Team will act as the liaison between Enterprises and UPMC’s Clinical Analytics Team, led by Oscar Marroquin, MD, Chief Healthcare Data and Analytics Officer, and managed by Jeff McKibben, MS, Clinical Analytics Senior Director. This partnership and close collaboration with the UPMC Clinical Analytics Team is an integral factor in the success of the Data Analytics and Informatics Team.

UPMC’s Clinical Analytics Team has created and maintains the clinical data warehouse that pools electronic health records from across our hospitals and clinical sites. The Data Analytics and Informatics Team can access this database to validate and quantify any health care challenge or opportunity presented to Enterprises.

For instance, as Enterprises continues to make investments and develop products, the Data Analytics and Informatics team can help understand the potential impact of such investments or products on UPMC’s patient population and determine how many lives could be affected if we choose to move forward with the opportunity. Such insights will enable Enterprises, our portfolio companies, and partners to make data-driven decisions in transforming ideas into scalable business and life changing medicine.

Jeff Jones, Senior Vice President of Product Development, worked across the organization to conceptualize forming a dedicated team focused on data.

“It’s been about a month since the Data Analytics and Informatics team was established, and the deep health care domain knowledge and analytics expertise shines as roles and responsibilities evolve while strategies continue to be shaped,” said Jeff.

Andrew Adrian-Karlin, MBA, Technology Services Development and Delivery Director, joined Enterprises to build teams emerging inside of Technology Services, organizing the broader team’s overarching skills and capabilities. Andrew’s background and expertise helped execute the creation of the Data Analytics and Informatics team.

“What I’ve noticed my entire time working in health care is a need to clearly identify and explain the why and specific impacts of a solution,” said Andrew. “The health care industry is complex, and a lot of individuals need to believe and understand the outcomes to take on a new company and idea.”

Michele Mueser, MS, Senior Director of Data Engineering, is providing mentorship and support to the new team and will guide them as they grow.

“Health care data, its relationships and rules for use and presentation, is complex,” said Michele. “I am excited to be a part of this opportunity that will highlight the value and impact of leveraging the right data and establish traceability and repeatability in the findings and insights.”

Deepan Kamaraj, MD, Ph.D., will lead the team as the Data Analytics and Informatics Director.

“As a Product Manager at Enterprises, I felt the power timely data insights had on articulating complex healthcare problems to inform mission-critical decisions,” said Deepan. “Through this next chapter, I am excited to support our colleagues across Enterprises to craft data-driven stories illustrating the impact of their exciting work, working alongside our Clinical Analytics team and talented analysts.”

The other team members include Josh Alston, MS, Senior Data Analyst, and Samiran Ghosh Roy, MS, Technical Product Analyst.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the creation of this new team. While taking on a notoriously difficult challenge, they will pave the way for Enterprises’ use of data to drive decisions in the years ahead.
