UPMC Enterprises engineer wins ‘Speak Up for Safety Award’

Spencer Conklin, Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, was named one of the 2018 Speak Up for Safety Award recipients by UPMC.

Recognized as a role model for safety and security of patients’ data in research and development efforts, Spencer works across many projects at Enterprises, including Health Care Operating System (hcOS), UPMC Genome Center, and MyUPMC.

Established in 2011, the award honors Richard L. Simmons, MD, a distinguished service professor of surgery; chairman emeritus, Department of Surgery; and medical director, UPMC. The award was named for Dr. Simmons in recognition of his leadership in advancing methods for measuring and reporting health care quality and expanding staff members’ capacity to evaluate the quality and safety of health care. The award honors those who show commitment to Dr. Simmons’ values and passion for patient safety, and who speak up and advise whenever they see a patient safety issue.

Patient safety is a top priority at UPMC and patient data safety is critical for HIPAA compliance. Through his hard work, Spencer has allowed UPMC Enterprises to lead innovation beyond HIPAA compliant cloud services. He assures that there is operational excellence built around Enterprises’ systems so that they are used in day-to-day operations, and all development efforts are integrated with security efforts with minimal friction.

Spencer leads security efforts at Enterprises in a way which is at the forefront of the industry. Congratulations to Spencer on this well-deserved honor!
