Reader Poll: Where do you think health care data will be stored in the coming years?

The health care industry’s use of the cloud is the subject of much discussion as hospitals and health systems look to better manage their rapidly expanding volume of data and implement advanced solutions, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence.

At UPMC, the use of public cloud services is integral to a number of IT projects. Yet not all health systems around the country are viewing the cloud with as much optimism.

The Center for Connected Medicine (CCM), a thought leadership hub jointly operated by GE Healthcare, Nokia, and UPMC, asked health system IT executives to weigh in on the cloud debate. The results indicate many don’t expect to be using the public cloud for the majority of their data in the next three years.

As part of its annual Top of Mind research project, the CCM partnered with The Health Management Academy to survey health systems on their health IT priorities for 2019 and beyond.

Among the many questions in the survey, executives were asked where they believe the majority of their organization’s health data will be stored by 2022. Only 10% of respondents answered, “public cloud.” Nearly two-thirds of respondents (60%) chose “hybrid-private cloud.” Another 20% selected “on-premises data centers.”

Keep an eye out for the CCM’s full Top of Mind research report, which will include detailed findings on cybersecurity, telemedicine, and interoperability. The report will be published on the CCM website on Nov.19.

In the meantime, we’re curious to know how you would answer the question. See this month’s reader poll below.

Here are the results of last month’s question:

What do you think about mortality? Would you rather live a longer life or a healthier life?

  1. Longer, please – I’m ready to be 200 and see the future! Bring on the aches and pains! (15.4%)
  2. Healthier life – I’d be happy with current lifespans as long as I’m active until the end! (84.6%)
