The inventors among us – NGI team granted design patents

Several current and former members of the NGI team were recently granted design patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for their work on the imaging platform.

Next Generation Imaging (NGI) – a joint development project between UPMC Enterprises and GE Healthcare – is creating the next generation digital imaging platform for health care. The GE platform has been rolled out to UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon so far in 2018.

The following people were awarded design patents:

  • Mike Butler
  • Eric Fluharty
  • Tao Jing
  • Kristen McConnell
  • Gretchen Mendoza
  • Stacy Norman
  • Bryon Pigg
  • Anna von Reden
  • Ethan Winograd

Below is a list of the design patents that have been granted. Design patents cover visual design and other two- or three-dimensional elements. They provide 14 years protection and require that a design be novel and substantially different from known designs.

The team is awaiting approval of several utility patents, which cover the processes and composition of inventions, and which normally take longer to review.

UPMC Enterprises President Tal Heppenstall said the achievement demonstrates that “they are quite the inventors and they should all be very proud of this honor.”
