Michael Sebetich (Mike, but some people call me Sebby), Engineering Manager, Photon & Higgs

How did you get into the industry? I left a long career in finance technology to join UPMC Enterprises. I was attracted to UPMCE because I feel like it will give me the opportunity to solve challenging engineering problems that are also personally meaningful. To me it will be pretty awesome to say that the work I do is saving and improving people’s lives.

Are you a Pittsburgh local or did you grow up elsewhere? I grew up in a small coal mining town outside of Washington, PA, or as the locals call it “Worshington PA”. I did my undergrad at CMU and spent several years after working in NYC, where I met my wife. When our first daughter was born we decided to move back to the Pittsburgh area to be near my family.

What makes you a geek (if you consider yourself one)? I love to code and work with new technology in general. I spend as much time as I can learning and coding. I’m also a big Star Trek fan and have already started to turn my 7-year-old into a Trekkie as well.

Free space: Share any fun fact! My wife, Kook Hee, is from Seoul, South Korea. We’ve traveled there five times in the past seven years and had a traditional Korean wedding in 2013
