Do you have any kids? Any pets? I have a 5-month-old daughter named Tessa. I’m not allowed any pets until I get a barn.

What’s your least favorite word? I really don’t care for the phrase “It is what it is.” Is it? Further, in my previous position, the word “liaison” was part of the regular terminology. I misspelled it for months and I often found the word misspelled in the database.

Where in the universe would you like to visit someday? Pluto. I’ll take some firsthand measurements to help figure out if it’s a planet.

What’s in your perfect meal? It might be controversial, but I love peanut butter.

Free space: Share any fun fact! I love motorcycles and dirt bikes. I started riding when I was 4 years old. Also, I spent two years working in pharmacies in Hawaii for McKesson. There are a lot of geckos in the Hawaiian pharmacies and I’m told they’re preferable to the cockroaches.

What’s your least favorite word? Quiet. As a holdover from my EMS days, I superstitiously avoid saying the Q word.

Throwback!

Bill Costantini, Subject Matter Expert – Data Engineering Team

How did you get into the industry? It’s a long story. I started as a RN at Presbyterian in 1988 after graduating from Nursing School. I began work in Liver Transplant ICU and stayed there for 10 years. During that time, I also worked on my skills in computers and programming. While in Nursing School, I wrote and sold a program to a Trucking company to manage their trip leasing. While working as a Nurse I started a small computer business with another RN. We sold PC’s, did upgrades and troubleshooting. That later grew into a printing business doing Weddings. With all that going on, in 1998 I was approached to join the Clinical Team for the Cerner implementation. I had worked on the Emtek deployment to the ICU’s before. After moving to the UPMC Cerner team, and working on building out the Cerner application, I was asked to take on managing the technical team for Cerner. I did that from 2000 to 2013, then came to UPMCE as a Dev Manager, and several other roles over time. So, it was a slow start into IS followed by jumping into it with both feet and then some.

How long have you been working at UPMCE? June this year made it 5 years. I have been with UPMC for 30 years overall.

What’s changed the most since you started here? Use and dependency on Computers has been the biggest change in 30 years at UPMC. At UPMCE, I would say that it is the constantly flowing and change to match up to the market and industry trends that have increased in speed over the last 5 years.

What’s your favorite part about working here? Lots of things. After working in the ICU for 10 years, then 15 years in managing Cerner and the IOC, it’s kind of refreshing to be able to work on things that are creative and developing without also worrying about someone bleeding out, or the systems crashing and the entire health systems patient care is impacted at the same time. It’s also great to see things that we do benefit UPMC patient care whether directly (bedside) or indirectly (back office) that innovate care and address the common problems in healthcare overall.

Do you have an unusual talent or hobby? While working on Cerner and in ISD I got into Disaster Recovery and Systems Management and have taught/presented on it at University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Pitt Bioinformatics, and Oracle Open World over the years.

Share any fun fact? I am a Trekkie as well as a Star Wars fan (I saw Star Wars EP4 when it first came out 114 times in the theater in its first run), but am also a major Whovian Fan and have done podcasts and web stuff on it, and spent 2 weeks in New Castle Upon Tyne in the UK working on UPMC’s International team deploying Cerner there, and got to soak up all the Whovian atmosphere there.
