UPMC recently announced a strategic partnership between CarepathRx and Chartwell, UPMC’s own specialty pharmacy and home infusion service.

Throughout the country, specialty pharmacies and home infusion services are growing rapidly to serve an aging population with high rates of chronic disease. This adds to cost pressures on both health care systems and their patients. To help address this rising need, UPMC recently announced a strategic partnership between CarepathRx and Chartwell, UPMC’s own specialty pharmacy and home infusion service.

Combining the expertise of CarepathRx with Chartwell’s management services functions will help health systems around the country offer state-of-the-art home infusion and specialty pharmacies. Now more than ever, health systems are expected to build out capabilities that deliver a coordinated and consumer-friendly experience to patients – and pharmacy is no exception.

Over the past several decades, UPMC has built a unique pharmacy model that includes homegrown solutions like Chartwell as well as external partnerships. The team at UPMC Enterprises has worked alongside pharmacy experts both within and outside of UPMC to support the development and implementation of innovative solutions.

One such solution is RxAnte, which earned an investment from UPMC Enterprises in 2016. Working with health plans, providers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers, RxAnte delivers analytics-powered solutions and clinical services so that their target markets can realize more value from medications, with the ultimate mission of improving the way medicines are prescribed, taken, and paid for. In 2019, RxAnte launched Mosiac Pharmacy Service, a tech-enabled solution designed to improve medication use, outcomes, and pharmacy experience with select Medicare populations.

Highlighting in-house pharmacy innovation is UPMC RxExpress, an AI-powered virtual assistant and CRM platform currently in use at 14 UPMC facilities. RxExpress was designed to lower readmissions by integrating pharmacy support directly into the discharge process for patients. The solutions, built by UPMC Enterprises, have seen early success and the team continues to partner with others around UPMC to not only improve, but expand on the service.

UPMC Enterprises continues to be committed to finding, creating, and supporting novel solutions in all aspects of health care. Follow our blog for more stories about exciting pharmacy advancements in the coming weeks.
